Whatever the reason for the seat belts, it showed that the public was willing to "go along" with any somewhat plausible idea that the boys in DC said was good for us. /sarcasm/ /or not/ Think what TV could have been? Mr. Rogers or Muppets on steroids! Hell, Bill Nye himself could have prevented our huge science gap. Educated consumers? Informed electorate? A BS proof society? Ok, so we can not save the TV, but if the admins, or at least a huge bunch of them got together (they could use the interwebs) and could decide when enough is enough and agree when to pull the plug.........
